Objective

The objective of the Health Information Technology Program is to prepare students for entry-level employment in a health care setting or business office environment, with emphasis on insurance billing, medical records, scheduling, customer service and administrative responsibilities. Students will be trained in the use of medical software as well as the Microsoft Office Suite products. The Health Information Technology Program curriculum concentrates on business software applications and will include courses in medical terminology, medical insurance procedures, medical records, medical billing, and anatomy and physiology.

Course Sequence

142 PEDDV-Personal Development(45 lecture hours, 3 credits)
Students will engage in peer counseling and support sessions to help analyze themselves as they explore their neeeds, fears, strengths and barriers, particularly as these issues relate to employment.
120 KYNG-Keyboarding/Data Entry I(15 lecture hours & 60 lab hours, 3 credits)
Instruction for this course includes emphasis on developing speed on the alpha keyboard. Activities will be used to measure accuracy of words per minute for specific job related activities. Intermediate and advanced students will ocus on class assignments/production typing and increasing speed and accuracy. Hands-on training in entering data in the computer using the alphanumeric keyboard is part of this course. Activities will be used to measure accuracy of keystrokes per hour for specific job-related activities.
122 WPRG-Microsoft Word/Office Procedures(45 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 4 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with a wide range of experience in word processing concepts and procedures using Microsoft Word software. The course will assist students in acquiring and practicing the skills nedded to perform basic office skills.Students will be introduced to the basic format for business letters, memorandums, and reports as well as more advance professional features such as tables, macros, file management, and mail merging. Through classroom instruction and hands-on tasks, each student is given an opportunity to comprehend and interpret written instructions, use reference materials, file and manage records, and handle mail.
101 BC-Business Communications(30 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 3 credits)
This course is designed to strength the writing skills necessary to communicate effectively in business communications. Topics will include a review of sentences, punctuation, capitalization, number expression, and recognition of common sentence errors. This course emphasizes precision of expression, proofreading, and vocabulary building. Various business forms that the students will utilize in a typical office setting will be used. Group projectsn and office simulations are given.
111 BM-Business Mathematics(30 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 3 credits)
The business mathematics course provides a review of basic arithmetic skills needed to handle responsibilities typical of entry-level office occupations. In addition to the manual instruction portion of the course, students are afforded an opportunity to enhance their employability skills by learning the proper use of the ten-key calculator.

A continuation of the keyboarding course, instruction for this course includes emphasis on developing speed on the alph akeyboard. 141 PRDV-Professional Development(45 lecture hours, 3 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with the tools needed to realistically assess their interests and aptitudes in terms of today's job market. Students will be exposed to working in groups, the different roles and behaviors that affect a group, and to professionalism in the workplace. Exposure will be given to understanding methodsused in successful job search, retention and career advancement.
123 EXCL-Excel(30 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 3 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with the Excel computer skills necessary for entry-level positions. Students will develop a thorough knowledge of spreadsheets. charts, schedules, and graphs. Students will study Excel functions that are used in medical offices.
124 BBC-Basic Billing and Coding(30 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 3 credits)
This course teaches the student basic skills in Billing and Coding ICD9-10. The usage of the EOB(Explanation of Benefits) will be learned. Also, students will learn HIPAA compliance requirements, legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts of billing and coding.
131 MTO-Medical Terminology(30 lecture hours & 30 lab hours, 3 credits)
THis course offers a overview of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology. Students develop an understanding of common terms used in the medical field by learning root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
132 TPB-Third Party Billing(30 lecture hours & 60 lab hours, 4 credits)
This course introduces the practice of third party billing. Topics include insurance terminology, ICD and CPT coding. Students will practice filling out insurance claims as well as other insurance forms.
133 APO-Anatomy & Physiology(45 lecture hours, 3 credits)
Students will gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of the human body. Students will learn basic human body functions and life process; name the major human body systems and relate their functions; and name the major components of each system, describe briefly their anatomical locations and structures and their physiological functions.
100 EXT-Externship(100 hours, 2 credits)
This course is designed to provide hands-on, training-related work experience and a mentor relationship with an individual in the medical office field. This will be the student's first step towards full-time employment.
